What is Medicare Supplements Insurance (Medigap)?

Medigap is Medicare Supplement Insurance that helps fill "gaps" in Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like:
  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles
This means that Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies take over the costs where Original Medicare stops. Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S.

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medicare supplement insurance policy pays its share.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies allows you the freedom to see ANY doctor in the United States that accepts Medicare. This is different from a Medicare Advantage plan, where you would be subject to a specific network of doctors for coverage.

If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, here's what happens:
  • Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs.
  • Then, your Medigap policy pays its share.

To qualify for any Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, you must have both Medicare Part A and Part B.

Part A  covers hospital care services, and Part B covers doctors’ visits and other medical expenses at an 80-20 coinsurance split with the Medicare beneficiary.  Meaning that the Medicare beneficiary would be financially responsible for 20% of whatever procedures they happen to occur. This is why a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy is so important, it picks up the financial responsibility from where Original Medicare leaves off.
  • There is typically a monthly premium attached to Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies and this tends to raise each year of the members life.
  • A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy is different than a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while Medigap policies only supplements Original Medicare benefits.

You will still be responsible for paying your Part B premium of $144.60 (could differ), which is standardized by Medicare.
Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can't cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.

*Prescription Drug plan complement Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies well. They provide Medicare Supplement policy holders with peace of mind with all prescription needs. Consider one of our represented Prescription Drug plans to give you a complete Insurance security blanket*
